PRAGUE (SEPTEMBER 25) - Inmates and staff of the Prison Service are helping in the areas of the Czech Republic affected by the devastating floods.

Approximately a hundred inmates from various Czech prisons are actively helping clean up areas devastated by recent flooding. They help especially focus on restoring crucial facilities such as schools, kindergartens, and hospitals.

The Czech Prison Service responded swiftly to this humanitarian crisis, mobilizing inmates from over 20 facilities that were unaffected by the floods. This unprecedented response is a first in the service’s history, initiated by the director’s outreach to local governors and mayors.

Alongside physical efforts, a material collection was organized, gathering over 20,500 liters of bottled water, 15,000 liters of disinfectant, and various cleaning supplies. Thousands of gloves, masks, and other protective gear were also gathered. The collection included countless brooms, buckets, shovels, trash bags, rags, and brushes, alongside personal hygiene items. These collected materials were distributed through the Czech Red Cross to those in need.

The prison management has encouraged this voluntary activity, allowing inmates to participate in cleanup tasks. Their willingness to engage in these efforts not only provides essential support to the communities but also fosters a sense of purpose among the inmates.

This initiative is strong evidence that even in times of crisis, individuals can come together to achieve significant change. The ongoing collaboration between the Czech Prison Service and local authorities is a prime example of solidarity in the face of adversity.
