Stráž pod Ralskem prison
The Prison Stráž pod Ralskem is located in the foothills of the Jizera Mountains in the Liberec Region and was established in 1973. It originated from former hostels which were used for uranium mine workers.
Since that time many changes and renovations have been undertaken within the prison area. During 1994-2001 there was also a special department for pre-trial detention in use. The shooting range in the prison is accessible to the uniformed members of the Prison Service and to students of the Institute for Prison Staff Education for their working needs and professional training.
The prison is currently profiled as a high security prison. Within the prison facility there is a prison unit with supervision where the inmates are placed in bedrooms and an enhanced physical security unit where they are in cells. In January 2007, a specialized department with cells for mentally retarded convicts with supervision was opened. The prison capacity is 736.
The main priority of the prison management is prisoners´ employment. Prisoners are employed outside the prison, mainly working in the glass industry, agriculture, metal work or they assemble electric lights. Convicts are also employed within the guarded prison premises, mainly assisting with installation of electric volumes in cars. Some of the prison internal operations and maintenance are also done by the inmates.
Various training courses are provided as a part of convict treatment programmes, specialized educational programmes and leisure-time activities, such as health education course, social-legal minimum course, Czech and world history course, language courses, computer lessons, and others. There is also interest in leisure sport activities (e.g. a convict football team has been active for several years).
The prison has 306 employees, of whom 192 are uniformed members and 114 are civilian employees of the Prison Service. The prison organises various cultural and sport activities for the staff. The prison cooperates with partner prisons in Poland and Slovakia. They exchange information and good practices as well as organize various sport events.
