Pardubice Prison was built in the years 1889 - 1891. Conceived, for its time, as a state-of-the-art facility, a model of the prison was displayed at the National Jubilee exhibition in Prague in 1891. The prison has been profi led for imprisonment of inmates in a guarded prison, there are also units for supervised imprisonment, and a specialised unit for prisoners permanently unfi t for work assignment. The total accommodation capacity is 665 places including the units for inmates sentenced to guarded or supervised imprisonment, as well as for those placed in the specialised unit.
The employment of prisoners is directed into three main areas, based on internal operations serving the prison. Inmates also work in the prison’s own manufacturing facilities, which focus on making clothing for imprisoned persons across the whole of the Czech Republic. The third area includes employment by private companies (printing offi ce, laundry, etc.).
The education of inmates is mainly organised through the prison’s education and training centre, where qualifi cations can be acquired in the following fi elds: garments manufacture, group catering, information technology, painting and decorating, English language, and elementary school courses. Those who pass their courses then receive, based on the type of education programme, a certifi cate of apprenticeship or another
certifi cate, depending on the subject of the course. Leisure and special formative activities, which are organised primarily by the staff of the imprisonment unit, are aimed towards the development of inmates’ personalities. Various sports clubs traditionally count amongst the most attractive leisure activities. Interest is also shown in therapeutic groups whose aim is to help inmates get a more realistic insight of themselves. The number of extramural activities is rising considerably, these being, amongst other things, a very effective element in the positive motivation of inmates. Religious services are offered by the prison chaplain and volunteer workers from individual churches and religious organisations.
Pardubice Prison has a total of 276 employees. The prison manages for its employees recreation facility in Seč, which provide an environment suitable for water sports, hiking and other sporting enjoyment. With the use of means provided by the Fund for Cultural and Social Needs, trips to attend theatre performances and sports events, or tourist excursions are regularly arranged.
