Information in English
The prison is located in the Ústí nad Labem Region, at the outskirts of the village of Nové Sedlo. It was originally established as a branch of the Vykmanov labour camp in the Jáchymov area in 1958, but went through a series of reconstructions and organisational changes in the years afterwards. Since 1 January 2005, it has been profi led as a supervised prison, with a separate special unit for prisoners with personality and behavioural disorders caused by the use of psychotropic substances, sentenced to serve their terms in a supervised prison.
The total accommodation capacity of the prison is 430 places. Prisoners are housed in two- to nine-bed dormitories. Inmates imprisoned in the supervised unit are placed in dormitories where they are classifi ed into three groups, being differentiated according to the nature of their offence, implementation of treatment programmes, regular work assignments, and behaviour. The average term being served by male prisoners is two years. Permanent employment opportunities for prisoners are infl uenced by the geographical position of the prison, which lies in an agricultural area. Prisoners can therefore only be assigned to seasonal work at unguarded workplaces. Firms active within the premises of the prison employ inmates in the packaging of chemist goods and in carpentry. Through prisoner treatment programmes, inmates contribute to improving the aesthetical appearance of the prison and carry out minor maintenance and cleaning tasks in prison dormitories, with the aim of fostering self-regulating mechanisms in the inmates and developing their working habits and creativity. The educational activities of the inmates take place under the guidance by the imprisonment unit staff, and include courses in Czech language, law basics, highway code, IT-PC basics, etc. Further, the inmates are allowed to study within the network of primary and secondary schools, vocational colleges or universities in the Czech Republic. For several years, Nové Sedlo Prison has been organising, in co-operation with Secondary Vocational Centre and Secondary Vocational School in Žatec, theoretical waitering courses for unskilled inmates who show interest in further education. Special educational activities are organised both individually and in groups under the guidance of professional prison staff from the imprisonment unit. Amongst the activities offered are psychotherapy, music therapy, art therapy, pastoral activities, sound living style, anti-drug education, etc. The prison offers to inmates sporting activities such as fi tness exercises, „little football“ or „futsal“, netball and other ball games. Regular Olympiads are also popular. In the sphere of cultural interests, prisoners may also use the prison library or watch television. Popular leisure activities include sporting activities, fi shing group, music group, art group, world wars history club, world and nature. The prison co-operates with representatives of various churches, religious organisations, the Czech Red Cross, and other non-governmental organisations. The prison has almost 200 employees. The Fund of Cultural and Social Needs contributes to covering the expenses connected with their taking part in various sporting, cultural and learning activities. The offer includes individual psychotherapy, social and legal counselling and skills, sound life style, antidrug education or drug prevention advice bureau.
