Jiřice Prison is located in the village of the same name in the Nymburk district, not far from the town of Benátky nad Jizerou. It came into being as a result of the reconstruction of army barracks in the former military area. It dates its history since the year 1994 and is profi led as a guarded prison also including a controlled, or supervised, unit for imprisoned adult males. It has an accommodation capacity of 725, of which 191 are in the supervised unit. Within the prison, a centre for escort service has been established. More than 310 persons are employed by the prison, of whom almost 200 are members of the Prison Service and of the Judicial Guard. Prisoner treatment programmes place great emphasis on the employment of as many prisoners as possible. Outside the prison, prisoners work in agriculture or in engineering workshops. Inside it, they are employed in the kitchen, in storage, in a joinery workshop, etc. Inmates are given a chance to work on an unpaid, volunteer basis, such as auxiliary work in the orchard and the cleaning of external and internal areas of the prison. They are also given a chance to take part in various educational programmes, such as classes in foreign languages, and, respectively, in basics of computer and information technologies, labour and criminal law, and forms of social security. On successful completion of a respective schooling, prisoners may obtain a document certifying that they have passed a requalifi cation course. Inmates are encouraged to use their free time in an aktive and purposeful manner. They are offered, by the prison, a chance to participate in a variety of group and individua activities. Sports clubs are very popular, as well as some other, for example, the gardening, music and chess groups. Items produced by the handicrafts group entertain children in childrens’ homes, social care institutions and nursery schools. The prison co-operates with the Probation and Mediation Service, churches and various non-governmental organisations, and is continuously keeping close contacts with social workers. The renewal of the physical and mental energies of prison staff is being promoted by making use of modern facilities, where they can go to „switch off and recharge their batteries“. They have, at their disposal, a modern, fully-equipped fitness room, a new gymnasium, jacuzzi and sauna. The social programme has provided for the reconstruction of two residential houses in nearby Milovice, which have a capacity of 96 employee service flats.
